I don’t know about you, but the last couple of years seem to have flown by and left a rather unpleasant aftertaste. Two years ago, I began writing my new book, Start Where You Are, Life Lessons in the Pursuit of Happyness). I had no idea that the thoughts I began to put on paper would become today’s headlines. The new book is a response to the tens of thousands of people who wrote to me, emailed me, stopped me on the streets and airports. All of these people were asking me pretty much the same questions, such as “Why didn’t you quit? What made you keep going? Weren’t you afraid?” What I have done in the new book is attempt to answer all of these questions which are so relevant today—hence the book’s title—Start Where You Are.
This economic environment has touched all of us adversely. I had an experience on the subway in New York City recently that put a lot of today’s reality in perspective. I happened to be riding in a subway car that was full of folks in business suits carrying brown boxes. It turns out that I was with the first wave of 55,000 folks laid off by Citibank. I was recognized, a conversation started and I said loud enough for others to hear “Hey, you lost your job, not your skills, talent or expertise. What you have to do now is create opportunities where your skills, talent, expertise are transferable. In other words, Start Where You Are!”
